Santiago de Compostela Pilgrimage Tour
11 Day Santiago de Compostela Pilgrimage Tour
Our journey will begin by making our way to the brand new ferry ‘The Galicia’ for a two night cruise to Spain’s north coast. On arrival in Spain we will join the ancient Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route in the old Spanish town of Fromista. Here we will visit the church de San Pedro, the first of many peaceful places of reflection in small towns and major cities as we head west. Our destination is the spectacular Cathedral of St James in Santiago, the goal of millions of pilgrims for thousands of years. After spending a free day taking in the amazing sites of Santiago de Compostela we will head for the seaside town of Foz and our seafront hotel, before heading back to Santander and the ferry home. Effort has been made to keep the amount of time on the road to the minimum and plenty of time has been built into the schedule to rest in interesting places on free days.
Proposed Itinerary for our Santiago de Compostela Pilgrimage Tour
Day 1 – Leave Preston for Portsmouth with pick-up places along the route, to catch the late ferry, which has excellent restaurants, bars and cinemas for your entertainment, before you take to your comfortable cabin.
Day 2 – Today our relaxing cruise continues as we sail on to Spain.
Day 3 – We will arrive on the north coast of Spain early and will head south to join the pilgrimage route in Fromista and the ancient church of San Pedro. We will then head to the small, but ancient town of Astorga, where we will stay at the impressive Hotel Astur Plaza, overlooking the historic town square, with the Cathedral and the Episcopal palace, by Gaudi nearby. This is as great opportunity to experience Spain well off the tourist path, whilst remaining on the pilgrimage route.

Day 4 – We will have the morning in Astorga to explore the wonderful ancient buildings, architecture and carvings, before following our pilgrimage route further west to the Knights Templar town of Ponferrada, with its Templar castle, which covers approximately 16,000 square meters. Ponferrada also has several attractive medieval churches and many of the municipal buildings and churches are topped with the local blue slate. The town was donated to the Templar order in 1178, by Fernando II of Spain, for protecting the pilgrims who passed through on their road to Santiago de Compostela, as are we. In fitting with the status of the town we will be staying at the Hotel El Castilo (The Castle), for two nights.
Day 5 – We will ave a free day to explore Pontferrada with its magnificent Knight Templar, interesting churches, town plazas and, of course, the many restaurants and bars.

Day 6 – Leaving Ponferrada, we will head over the mountains, following the age old pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, where we will check into the spectacular Hotel Monumento San Francisco, a wonderful and historic building in itself.

Day 7 – We will be free today to take in Santiago de Compostela, the final destination of the pilgrimage. This large stone town with its charming narrow streets and fantastic restaurants and shops, is a real gem. The center piece is of course, the magnificent plaza with the Cathedral of St James towering over it, creating an unforgettable scene. But have an early breakfast and prepare for a busy day, because this small town is packed with important historical monuments and sites of great interest.
Day 8 – Today we leave Santiago, but this is by no means the end of our adventure as we are heading to the coast, to spend time reflecting on our pilgrimage by the sea in the town of Foz.
Day 9 – Today we can relax in the small seaside town of Foz, take sea walks on this beautiful coast and have a generally relaxed day.
Day 10 – Head back to Santander and our ship, the Galicia, for the overnight luxury cruise back to Portsmouth.
Day 11 – Arrive in Portsmouth and head home.
